Sour Cream Raisin Bars

piece 3One of my favorite things to do as a baker and cook is to make (or learn how to make) something that is special to someone, especially if the item evokes positive memories of a person or time from the past. Sometimes people come up to me and request that I do this for them or someone they love, and sometimes I do it as a surprise for someone who didn’t know I was paying attention.

Orange Dream Torte

orange torteIt is still February, and we have a bit of winter yet to get through, but if you’d like a little taste of spring or even summer, this may be the dessert for you. Remember orange creamsicle ice cream bars? Yeah, this torte sorta tastes like them.

This torte is creamy and dreamy and oh so light.

Did I mention beautiful too? It is stunning.

Strawberry Squares

pieceLooks can be deceiving. We all know that and yet we still judge people and things by how they look. These bars don’t look like anything special–kind of plain, not a bit of chocolate–and yet every time I make them, I get rave reviews. I made these for church last week, and I had at least three people come up to me later and say, “I really liked those strawberry things you made.”

Banana Pancake Bites

banana basket and plateIt’s Pinewood Derby season again. To my family, it doesn’t mean just racing wooden cars, it also means breakfast. My son will be racing with his Cub Scout troop this weekend, but our church also runs a Pinewood Derby every year for anyone ages 2 through adult, and I have been making the breakfast for the hungry racers and their families for the past several years. When I first started doing it, the organizers of the Derby really had just one requirement: they wanted everything to be finger food.

Mission accomplished.

Caramelitas

cutEvery Wednesday afternoon I volunteer in my church’s kitchen preparing a meal for the evening, and every week I bring dessert to accompany the meal. One of my fellow volunteers (98-year-old Elaine) usually greets me eagerly every Wednesday with the question, “What did you make?” and she is usually quite delighted with my answer. (She has a bit of a sweet tooth.) This week as I was cutting these bars to put on serving trays, Elaine was right by my side supervising. I asked her if she’d like to try one. She tried to act like it was no big deal either way, but I know better. She took one bite of her bar, slapped her hand on the counter, and declared, “These will get you a man!!” This outburst was followed by lots of “mmm’s” and “wow,” and “yum.”
