Mother’s Day: A Few Thoughts, part 1
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” The opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens come to mind when I think about Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday. For many, this is a wonderful day to celebrate amazing women–mothers, grandmothers, aunts, step-mothers, women who were “like a mother,” mentors, and friends. Many will go out for brunch or have breakfast in bed or gather with family for a nice meal at home. Many moms will be given the royal treatment and will be acknowledged for their many kindnesses and sacrifices. It may be a joyful day for forgiveness and reconciliation for some. Card and flower sales will peak this weekend. Women who struggled to conceive will be amazed at the miracle of life that finally came to them. Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate life and family and so many good things.

Tin Can Gifts and Favors
Now that May is here, we are heading into a HUGE gift giving-party-celebration season. Today I am going to share a craft idea that can cover all of those events and more. Now don’t run away scared just because I said the “C” word…

Tres Leches Cake
Cinco de Mayo is coming soon, so if you need an idea for something to bring to the party, this is it. Heck, even if you have absolutely no connection to Cinco de Mayo nor have any parties to go to, make this cake just because you can. Tres Leches cake does not look like much…yellow or white cake with some whip cream on top. Big deal, huh? Wait until you taste it.

Strawberries and Cream Cake Roll
If you like strawberry shortcake, you will most likely enjoy this dessert because it is basically strawberry shortcake in a roll. This dessert would be a great Mother’s Day treat, ladies’ luncheon dessert, or a tasty addition to some other spring celebration such as a bridal shower, baptism, or confirmation. It is pretty and delicious.
